“The Bible tells us that the state of the world will grow darker as we near the end of the age.” — Billy Graham

“Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” — Matthew 28:20 NLT

The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. — Joel 2:31

The age” as mentioned by Jesus refers to the current era of human history which is also known as “the age of grace” or the “Church age.” The end of this age signifies a significant transition (Tribulation) to a new age marked by the second coming of Jesus Christ and the establishment of God’s kingdom (“day of the Lord”).

In Matthew 24, Jesus tells His disciples some of the signs that will signify the coming of the end of this age.

And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.— Matthew 24:6–7

What is this age we’re currently living in?

As mentioned above, we are currently living in the age of grace which began after Jesus ascended to Heaven. It’s a time of God’s grace upon mankind to choose between Him or the god of this world (also known as Satan or the Adversary).

This age ends at the second coming of Jesus Christ which will occur at the climax of the Great Tribulation (Revelation 1:7;Revelation 19:11–21).

Within the age of grace is the Church age.

This age began on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit first came to dwell in believers — hence, the Church was born.

As the Church, we’ve been commanded by Jesus to spread His Gospel throughout the world, adding disciples to the Body of Christ (Matthew 16:16–20). This age ends when Jesus comes for all those sealed by the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17).

Why is it called the “end times” or the “last days”?

The “end times” or the “last days” refer to the events that will occur before this age concludes with the second coming of Jesus who would then usher in a new age — the Kingdom of God.

The end of the current age is basically the end of the world as we now know it — for we live in a world that has been given over to the Adversary, but when Jesus returns, that would end (Revelation 20:1–6).
