I’m A Christian Yet Why Do I Feel So Alone? (The Lonely Series: Two) #Inspirational #ChristianLiving

Sitting in the rocking chair, the middle-aged woman stared out of the nearby window.

The sun sat high in the clear blue sky over the fourteen-acre farmstead. Gray and reddish-brown chickens darted to and fro as they chased bugs and grasshoppers.

The late summer day was pleasant, yet sadness filled her.

With a scene like this spread before her, she had no right to be feeling this way.

Life in the rural community of northeastern North Dakota was a far cry from the chaotic one of the previous suburban home they left behind six years earlier.

She also left behind decade-old friendships – but it was the right decision for the family. She and her husband of nearly twenty years desired for their preteen son to experience life more like what they had growing up during the 1980s – where he could be a kid and not have to worry about gangs, or becoming just another face in the overcrowded and underfunded schools.

She told herself she’d make new friends.

While her son had blossomed over the years, she still hadn’t made any lasting friendships.

With her husband working in a city nearly an hour away and her son now in college, she found the house lonely.

With progressive vision loss, she no longer worked or drive. With the nearest neighbor a few miles away and no consistent transportation, time passed slowly.

Days filled with emptiness.

Her gaze swept over the lush lawn, one of the chickens was rolling in the black dirt near an outbuilding.

She felt ashamed. God had blessed her with a beautiful new home, and a loving family, how could she feel this way?

Granted, the recent pandemic didn’t help – but, she hadn’t this pang of loneliness with her house full of life and the activity of her son and husband. Now that life has gone somewhat back to normal, she wondered how she was going to fill her days.

With no one to share it with.

Ever felt this way?

Yes, even Christians feel lonely at times. But we’re never truly alone for we have the presence of the Holy Spirit within us.

The presence of God Himself.

Consider this promise:

Philippians 4:19

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Yes, this includes our need for friendships.

When we feel alone, claim this promise from Him through prayer and trust in Him – He will provide for this need. In the meantime, rest in His presence through the Holy Spirit and allow Him to fill you with comfort and hope.

A Prayer

Dear God, I feel alone, but I know you are with me in all I experience. Please fill my thoughts with hope. I thank you for the promise in your word that your hand will guide me. When I am weak, it is Your strength I can lean on. Help me to do that today; To look beyond my circumstances and trust you at your word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
