This World Is a Wrecking Ball

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. — Romans 12:2

Soon as my eyes turn from You,
my feet begin to wander.

Alas, the noise of this world
fills my ears with its carnal wisdom
and becomes the snare that wrecks me.

It is so easy to be distracted!

With the busyness of life — working, tending to the needs of family members, sporting events, social media, and its ever-increasing news of drama and disasters — it doesn’t take much to become too wound up in the affairs of this world.

I don’t think it’s an accident that we’re living in an age where we are kept busy — too busy — to set aside time to spend in God’s Word and prayer.

Speaking for myself, I notice if I don’t make time for Him daily, my mind quickly becomes absorbed with the things of the world, and I soon find myself drifting further and further from Him.

I’d become more focused on this world rather than on what’s above — my thoughts grow more worldly which would then lead me down the rabbit hole that belongs to the devil.

Peter warns us in 1 Peter 5:8 to always be vigilant and steadfast in our faith because our adversary, the devil, is always waiting for that time when we become complacent in our focus on Him.

The devil loves nothing more than to trip up Christians so they cannot be used as effective instruments for God.

Paul stressed the importance of our continually being in the Word of God —

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one. — Ephesians 6:16

We’re defenseless without the Bible which is our shield and our sword.

“The devil is not afraid of the Bible if it stays on our shelf.” — Corrie ten Boom

It is through our prayers that we can actively fight against any schemes the devil throws our way (James 4:7).

A spiritually filled and focused Christian is something the devil cannot stand because he knows he has no power against such a person.

Satan is desperate. He knows his time is short. He is going all out to destroy the witness of true believers and to remove the last vestiges of morality and decency.

The devil is going all out. He is offering the greatest smorgasbord of worldly pleasures and amusements in the history of the world to get us sidetracked from our spiritual pilgrimage and our witness for Christ. (Source: Billy Graham: Satan is Desperate)

As Christians, and I’m speaking to myself as well, we must remain aware of this tactic of the devil to use distractions to impede our walk with God. To do this we must be disciplined through our regular study of the Scripture and prayer time with Him.

Don’t allow distractions of the world become your wrecking ball.
