Immanuel. God is with us. (Matthew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14)
Isaiah prophesied of His coming and that He would be called Immanuel (Emmanuel is also used) which means “God with us.”
Jesus, who is also God, came down and was born flesh and blood to dwell among us, with us.
He could have come as an adult but, He came as a baby. He would grow up and spend a full lifetime in a human body (Yes, 33 years is a full lifetime in those days when the average lifespan was between 20–33 years).
As God, He knew all about the fallen state of man; but to choose to live among us? He experienced the frailty of our bodies. He too suffered under Roman rule. He knew what it was like to be an outcast and persecuted for being different. In an imperfect body, Jesus led a perfect life. And He too wrestled with mortality, the death of His body. He experienced death!
Christmas. Let the true significance of this day fill your mind and heart. Jesus willingly chose to be born as a babe and live among us to one day sacrifice Himself for us.
For what?
For an eternal life beyond this one. And not only that, but to experience the fullness of His love for us, and with that comes true peace and comfort.
